Canon 40D or 450D?

First of all I have to congratulate on Cube on a great purchase. LOL! You’ve stepped into an expensive hobby. I can feel your infected - ‘BUY BUY BUY’ virus.

Endless upgrading of equipment and accessories buying. Seeing you buy new toys I feel I need to buy something too.. what the hell. This feeling is weird. But hey now I have friends to discuss with on photography instead of lurking in forums.

Noisy little girl has been asking if she should also make the purchase. Its pretty hard to answer I guess. So many things to be answered. Its like a whole system to invest in. dSLR body or bodies?, flash?, bag(s), memory cards, lens and more lens…. LOL!

After much thinking here is what I thought of.. maybe it will help in deciding, Canon 40D or 450D and not confuse even more. I’m no pro, this is what I feel, don’t flame me.

LUCKILY she isn’t asking Nikon or Canon. Haha!

So why Canon? Enough said. A picture speaks a thousand words.

- Price. At this current time the best so far we found was at Harvey Norman (Singapore) for something like 1400++ SGD ? Comes with 30L drybox, memory 8GB, Tripod, kit lens, screen protector, Canon Selphy printer and other small stuffs, can’t remember details.
A 40D body only is about the same price as a 450D kit package already. 2 kinds of 40D kit pricing. 1 with a EF-S 17-85MM f/4-5.6 IS USM and the other EF-S 18-55MM f/3.5-5.6 IS (Same as Cube’s) Pricing is 2200++ and 1700++.

- Size. Remember we put the 40D and 450D side by side and with you also holding it. The 40D looks so much bigger on your hands whereas the 450D just fits.

40D with grip on the left and XT with grip on the right. Quite a difference I must say.

In conclusion, the 450D advantage is its size, pricing compared to 40D, new technology packed in it. Money saved here = better glasses purchased.

Beginner or not, the 10/20/30/40D is in a class of its own. SHIT AM I BEING BIAS HERE? No I’m not. The significance difference is also its built quality. I won’t say about the function wise. It just takes time to get used to. Personally I prefer having the 40D jog dial.

Battery life is better on a 40D. The shutter mechanism will last longer. Sometimes a matter of luck also comes in. LMAO! Well.. for the price you pay.. you know. A semi-pro vs an entry level. So if money is not an issue. I would get a 40D. If money was an issue. I would say for the extra few hundred, get the 40D after saving up. NOW I’m BIAS! I’m also too used to having a LCD settings on the top.

Hey wait. What about image quality. I BELIEVE. It won’t be much of a difference. Unless your a sucker for higher mega pixel. 10.1 vs 12.2 (40D/450D)

So are you prepared to lug a big ass camera around? Are you willing to invest in this system? If you need zoom = buy lens. No digital zoom for you anymore like in a point and shoot. Do you need the kit lens (After testing them and you know how it feels)? Do you want the freebies bundled?

Here this post helped you at all? You can consider buying from the below or just compare the prices.

Post Updates:

Technology updates are endless. Keep shooting, shooting, shooting, shooting and shooting instead. Buy within your means.

Please check fredmiranda.com for more serious comparison. Good luck with your purchase.

chivaz, how far will you go into this hobby?

do you prefer a smaller sized or a bigger sized slr?

with the announcement of 50d already. if you are going for 40d. then go ahead of the waiting of 50d. which probably is like soon?

if features and stuffs not that important, a 1000d will be good enough.
